Following decades of devoted viticulture, Plunkett Fowles have accumulated extensive local knowledge of soils and microclimes peculiar to the Strathbogie Ranges. Their efforts have crystallised into some of Victoria's most memorable wines. Stone Dwellers represents the fruits of labour and of experience, the best varietal expressions from Strathbogie Ranges each and every vintage. Roughly equal portions Shiraz are sourced from the estate's Whitegate and Upton Run Vineyards, to construct a wine with a generous palate and vibrant aromatic lift.

Stepping Stone is a reference to the gradual acquisition of land by the original settlers of the Limestone Coast as they discovered pockets suitable for farming. Similarly when making Stepping Stone, Stonehaven's winemaking team traverse from vineyard to vineyard, selecting fruit from parcels within the region which best express the varietal characteristics. Padthaway produces intensely aromatic and flavoursome Shiraz grapes that translate into a dark crimson wine with aromas of chocolate and cherry oak over which precede a soft and complex palate.

Warburn are amongst the Riverina's most conspicuous estates and one of Australia's most significant winemakers. They have extended their reach to retain good sites in the Barossa for the purpose of securing parcels of the finest Shiraz. Warburn's Stephendale Vineyards are exactingly husbanded to yield harvests of the highest order. The pick of Stephendale's grapes, exhibiting delightful spiced plum characters and vibrant tannins are fashioned into a generous wine which will be called upon again and again to accompany lamb cutlets or a gourmandise beef and burgundy pie.

There are a few parcels of Shiraz on the Lubiana property which lend themselves very nicely, to the finely boned styles of Cotes du Rhone. Selection of fruit is the genesis, the manner of vinification plays an essential role. The timing of macerations are cardinal to the extraction of fruit, building velvet texture and infusing fine tannin, ferments for the most part, must be carried out without moving or disturbing the wine as it evolves. A judicious term in fine French oak has trimmed and shaped the palate to perfection, Stefano recommends smoked meats, suckling pig sausages or quail in pancetta and polenta.

Star Lane are a low yielding, small vineyard operation who hand craft small batches of the most superlative Beechworth wines. The unique serendipity of richly loamed soils with sloped aspects offering exposure to sunny days and cool nights is idyllic for the flavour development and thorough ripening of Shiraz. Brilliantly integrated and soundly structured, its length of classy French oak supports an extended palate of exciting pastoral savouryness and delectable black liquorice fruit.

Most of the grapes from Mick Cann's property are destined for neighbouring Wild Duck Creek, where they are vinified into Heathcote's most prestigious wines. Like all good vignerons, Mick retains what he believes is the very pick of the crop for his own personal use. Showcasing samples directly from oak barrel, he was overwhelmed by the interest and the decision was made to design a label and to bottle the inaugural St Michaels Vineyard. He has released an extremely limited, small batch Shiraz, with remarkable structure and stately palate.

An assemblage of Shiraz parcels, hand picked off unique blocks of distinguished vine, up to a century of age, an arcane mix of ancient clones, which impart beguiling complexity. The topical old vines Barossa cépage of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre, fashioned to a style which would have warmed the hearts of the earliest Barossa settlers. The dominant component of Grenache is picked off an exceptionally low yielding property at Light Pass, originally planted by the Kennedy family in the 1960s. Leo Joe Kennedy husbanded these precious old vines for decades, he knew each planting by name and reserved the pick of fruit for inclusion into many of the Barossa's most memorable vintages.

The temperate climes of Valley Eden are cooled by easterly gully winds, which ensure a long slow ripening and complete development of varietal characters in the grapes. A harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon from the warmer northern parts of the Valley, planted to auspicious red soils over limestone, is vinified alongside fruit from a cooler Eden Valley site, coalescing into a cornucopia of brambleberry and dulcetly perfumed blue fruit flavours. Only ever made in the most outstanding vintage years, barely more than a hundred dozen of Eurus were produced.
